Happy 88th birthday, Dad! After living out of a backpack for a year, the experience of unpacking dozens of boxes to move back into our house is a strange mix of Christmas morning (eg: So excited to wear those jeans again!) + buyer's remorse (eg: we actually paid for that?!) + reverse culture shock bewilderment (eg: how many reusable water bottles does one family really need?)... We're home! Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes! So grateful for my extended family! It was wonderful to spend time together after 2-years of COVID cancellations. Special thanks to @eetay for finding another unique place with enough space for everyone (and @pcweastvillage for marrying her), to Head Chefs @mimosasandmedicine , @lindsaymcphail and Aunt Ruth, to cruise directors Joyce and @wrosemary for organizing so many entertaining activities, to the elders for sharing your stories, to all the older teens for being great role models for the younger kids, and everyone for the good company and interesting conversations amidst the chaos! I’m happy to be related to all of you and can’t wait for next year! #Wangfest2022 #familyreunion One last stop: Nerja, a relaxing beach town on Spain's Costa del Sol, perfect for reflecting on our year abroad. Scarpetta means "little shoe" literally in Italian, but it's also their word for scraping up every last bit of sauce with a bit of bread. (I love that the Italians have a word for that!) Over the past year, we've been lucky to eat many delicious meals worth "scarpetta-ing." One of my goals for our trip was to collect recipes for some of our favorite dishes, direct from the source. Plus, there's nothing like standing on the edge of a giant cliff to compel me to make sure I understand every word instruction in Spanish! Waffles. Fries. Crispy on the outside, light on the inside, with amazing toppings. Mmmmmmm. Belgium has some truly world-class carbs. #belgium The fireworks in Luxembourg were epic, maybe because they were celebrating James, Corbin and Asher finalizing their paperwork to become Luxembourgian citizens...or maybe they were celebrating their National Day...? (My boys really have applied for Luxembourg citizenship, thanks to James's great-grandfather and a quirky 2017 law that created a path to citizenship by direct descent.)
